Aequus Nox 2020 – Nordic Reflections

Aequus Nox 2020 – Nordic Reflections

Soon the time is upon us when the Northern Hemisphere will get brighter and longer days. At the same time, this means that the Southern Hemisphere begins a 6-month period of increasing darkness. The Vernal Equinox is soon to come! It is a time period when day and night are basically at the same length. Its name, Equinox, derives from the Latin word for equal (aequus) and for night (nox), Equal Night, which means that day and night are at the same length.

In a period of global quarantine, heightened anxiety and darkness, this year’s Equinox will probably pass unnoticed for many people. For those of us who see the Equinox as something important, something essential and not to miss, the date and instant time for the equation is this Friday, March 20 at 4:49 pm, local time Northern Europe. Hopefully, many will make time and take advantage of this opportunity and, some time in the period of March 19th to March 21st, celebrate that the Sun and the Light will once again increase its presence. It is a time for ceremonies, meditation and reflection.

It is also a time to gain strength and balance and to remind us that the Light is coming back after all. Because the Light has always come back after a time of darkness and this gives the attentive warmth, hope and comfort. The light and darkness are alternated and by this maintaining the equilibrium of the universe. While this is happening in the Northern Hemisphere, the opposite is happening in the South. This is not necessarily evil, as a coming darkness often involves rest and consolidating from that which has already been. That which has been in the light for a long time needs to rest, recover and ponder.

We in the Nordic countries will celebrate the increasing Light, while the Southern Hemisphere will celebrate the decrease of the same. When the disk of the Sun finally passes the celestial equator, we should remember that on the whole, and when the time is right, one should pay homage to the darkness as much as the light as these are the prerequisites for the existence of creation.

The Hermetic Order of the Nascent Aurora wishes you all an uplifting Aequus Nox!
